About Us

MISSION:

We publish literary fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and art that celebrate the delicate point where gritty urban life and art intersect. The work we publish ranges from highly experimental to 'in-your-face' realism.

HISTORY:

Curbside Splendor was conceived in the early 1990s at an apartment in Urbana, Illinois. Officially, it was founded in the fall of 2009 and is located in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.

STAFF:

Victor David Giron
President, Publisher, (aka "El Jefe")

Victor is a CPA who can't let go of his desire to be a philosopher. He started Curbside Splendor originally to publish his first novel Sophomoric Philosophy, but then was like "dang, publishing is fun," and so here we are.

Naomi Huffman

Naomi writes and edits and writes and edits. Sometimes she sleeps, designs, binds books, and bakes pies. She's the assistant literary editor at Newcity, where her reviews and essays appear regularly. She's also a co-host of Reading Under the Influence and founding editor of trilling magazine. Naomi blogs at naomihuffman.com.

Richard Thomas
Editor-in-Chief, Dark House Press
Richard is Editor-in-Chief of our imprint, Dark House Press, where they publish neo-noir, speculative fiction with a literary bent. He is the author of three books and over 75 short stories. His work has appeared in such places as Cemetery Dance, PANK, ChiZine, Midwestern Gothic, Arcadia, and Shivers VI alongside Stephen King and Peter Straub. In his spare time Richard writes a column, Storyville, at LitReactor, and reviews books at The Nervous Breakdown.

Peter Jurmu
Editor, Artifice Books

Peter packed up his bags from Boston and moved to Chicago because Chicago rocks so much more, and The Bruins can suck it.

Leonard Vance
Associate Editor
Leonard writes fiction and essays and you’ve probably seen him reading a book as he crosses the busy streets of Chicago.

James Tadd Adcox
Associate Editor

Tadd is a smarty pants author guy who's finishing his PhD at University of Illinois at Chicago.

Joey Pizzolato
Associate Editor

He lives in Austin, TX, and currently serves as the literary editor of Composite {Arts Magazine} (www.compositearts.com).

Catherine Eves
Events & Programming Editor
Shunned to the suburbs for the past four years of undergrad after spending her adolescence whining in rural Iowa, Catherine is glad to finally call Chicago home. This lover of literary tattoos and a nice bottle of close-out sale wine writes a mean press release and can organize an Excel file with her eyes closed. She also spends time working on Anti-Book Club, yo.

If you have a book that may fit our vision, please submit your manuscript and querly letter via our Submission Manager

E-Zine:

We accept submissions of short fiction, poetry, and photography/art for our e-zine at our Submission Manager ONLY! Submissions sent to any other address will not be reviewed. We're pretty open as to genre, though we're fond of gritty urban stories, and realism that is slightly off-balance. Urban fantasy is welcome here. We do not consider work that has been previously published elsewhere. We'll try to respond as soon as possible, generally within 3 to 6 months. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please inform us immediately if you need to withdraw your work. All submissions should include your contact info and a short bio that includes previous publications. Please also let us know how you found out about Curbside Splendor!

We consider prose pieces between 100 and 3,000 words. We consider poetry, but please do not submit more than 5 poems. Include work as a .doc / .rtf file attachment. All copy should be double-spaced. We also consider photography, but please submit no more than 5 photos. We feature a new photographer in each e-zine, for the cover and about 5 photographs that will appear in the interior.
